Offering a Thanksgiving Prayer
Rev. Kathy Fisher Letter 11-22 to 12-05 2020
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
What a wonderful time of year we are approaching! Thanksgiving Day is just around the corner and the first Sunday of Advent comes right afterwards! We will celebrate Thanksgiving this Sunday and then have The Hanging of the Greens the following Sunday as we begin Advent and prepare our hearts to celebrate once again the comings of our Lord, who comes continually in Word and Spirit. I pray that you all will be blessed and thankful for God’s abundant love and care. We have so much to be thankful for, especially in this year when we have had so many difficulties due to Covid-19.
I trust that you have received your yearly Commitment for Giving card in the mail already. I hope that each of us will prayerfully consider how God has provided for us throughout our lives. Then offer a prayer of thanksgiving to God as you ask, “Lord, what do you want to do through me to fulfill your will for Whitfield Memorial UMC?”
I’d like to share a Thanksgiving prayer from the UMC Book of Worship:
Thank you, Creator of the universe for the people gathered around us today.
We give thanks for the things of the earth that give us the means of life.
Thank you for the plants, animals, and birds that we use as food and medicine.
Thank you for the natural world, in which we find the means to be clothed and housed. Thank you, Lord, for the ability to use these gifts of the natural world.
Help us to see our place among these gifts, not to squander them or think of them as means for selfish gain.
May we respect the life of all you have made.
May our spirits be strengthened by using only what we need, and may we use our strength to help those who need us. Amen.

May your time of Thanksgiving be blessed with the love of God, family, and friends.
With God’s love,
